LONG BEACH, Calif. – The College of Charleston coed sailing team entered the 2016 Rose Bowl regatta with one goal in mind – achieving a podium finish at the US Sailing Center.
The Cougars did just that finishing 11 points shy of first-place Georgetown (69 points) totaling 80 points across the two-division event for second place. It marked the program's highest finish at one of the largest regattas in the country since a runner-up finish three years ago to Stanford in 2013.
CofC beat out a competitive field comprised of host Southern Cal, Boston University, Cal Poly, Long Beach State, Cornell, Fordham, Long Beach City College, MIT, Oregon State, Roger Williams, Santa Barbara City College, Santa Clara, Texas A&M-Galveston, Tufts, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Navy, Cal, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, Hawai'i, Oregon, UPenn, Wisconsin and Western Washington.
Sophomore Christophe Killian (Newport Beach, Calif.) skippered A-Division to a second-place finish with sophomore crew Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.), while freshman Charles Lawson Willard skippered B-Division to victory with junior crew Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.). Willard and Dapp combined for Top-5 finishes in 7-of-8 races to edge out the Hoyas in their respective division.
The Cougars close out their fall slate on a high note with the Rose Bowl regatta and will commence spring competition later this month.
