ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The spring season got off to a great start as the College of Charleston women's sailing team dominated the field of competition with at the SAISA Open and USF Women's regattas on Sunday.
“What a superb weekend for Cougar Sailing,” CofC Director of Sailing Greg Fisher said. “Our women dominated both regattas and we couldn't be more proud.”
After a runner-up finish a year ago at the USF Women's event, the Cougars sailed to a convincing 78-point victory over second-place and host South Florida tallying 131 points across two divisions.
Fifteen races were completed as CofC placed first in both A-and B-Divisions behind the rotations of senior skipper Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) and junior crew Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.) and sophomore skipper Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.) and senior crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.).
“Sailing down South this weekend was a good step in the development of our women's team,” CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. “They got some great light-wind racing in and made some nice improvements.”
Likewise at the SAISA Open, Charleston (54 points) edged regatta host Eckerd College (61 points) by a seven-point margin of victory at the two-division field that included sailors from Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Florida Tech, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, New College, NC State, Rollins College, Florida, Georgia. Miami (Fla.), UNCW, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Sophomore skipper Clare Dahl (Newport Beach, Calif.) and sophomore crew Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) claimed the win in A-Division, while junior skipper Nikki Medley (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore crew Marissa Bamonte (Tiverton, R.I.) finished runner-up to Florida in B-Division.
“Our women's teams performed very well this weekend against a lot of coed teams,” CofC Assistant Coach Mitch Hall said. “We learned a lot and look forward to a great spring season.”
The Cougars will continue spring sailing by hosting the Charleston Women's regatta on Feb. 27-28 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and traveling to the Frank Mendelblatt Team Race on Feb. 27-28 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
