ATLANTA, Ga. – The fifth-ranked College of Charleston sailing team led wire-to-wire at the North Points #5 regatta to sweep both divisions, and also placed second at the Truxtun Umsted Memorial and fifth at the Yale Women's Intercollegiate to wrap up another successful weekend Sunday.
The Cougars finished first in all but one race across the two divisions of competition at the North Points #5 Saturday, as freshman skipper Will Martens (San Rafael, Calif.) and sophomore crew Peyton Alexander collected the minimum five points in B-Division. Freshman skipper Steven Leuck (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman crew Anna Cornetta (Norfolk, Va.) cruised to an easy win in A-Division as well to give the Cougars an 18-point victory as the day ended.
The Cougars placed second at the Truxtun Umsted Memorial regatta Sunday, and nine points behind first-place Georgetown's total of 398 points. Junior Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) skippered A-Division to a first-place finish with junior crew Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.), collecting 97 points, while senior skipper Jack Cusick (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior crew Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.) finished ninth in B-Division with 149 points.
"We had some really tough sailing conditions at Navy," said Peschiera. "We had a lot of current and light shifty winds of two to seven knots until today's very last set, where the wind picked up a little more. The team worked hard and did a great job in being consistent to take home second place overall."
In C-Division, Enrique Arathoon (Guatemala City, Guatemala) finished second with 78 points while Kelly-Ann Arrindell (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) placed second in D-Division with 83 points.
At Yale, junior skipper Paris Henken (Coronado, Calif.) and junior crew Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.) placed seventh in A-Division with 111 points. Senior Nikki Medley (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) skippered B-Division to a third-place total of 80 points with senior crew Irene Abascal (Guatemala City, Guatemala).
"The competition was fierce forcing you to be consistent in a variety of conditions," said assistant coach Mitch Hall. "Everyone had very good boat speed so it was difficult to come back from a deep race. Overall, I'm proud of our performance as a whole with our top-five finish and am looking forward to next weekend!"
Next weekend, the Cougars will travel to the Mrs. Hurst Women's Invite, hosted by Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. on Oct. 22 and 23, and will host the Double Handed Offshore Race and SAISA Match Race on Oct. 22 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex.
