Cougars Clamp Down Late to Best Armstrong State 66-57
11/2/2016 9:29:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – It took a come-from-behind effort in the fourth quarter, but the College of Charleston women's basketball team came up with the season-opening 66-57 exhibition win over the Armstrong State Pirates.
• After scoring the first basket of the game, the Cougars didn't manage to take back the lead until the opening minute of the fourth quarter. The game changed entirely when, down two, the Cougars drew a foul on Machala Raymonville who was assessed a technical on top of her personal. That gave Breanna Bolden four free throw attempts, and the senior knocked down all four to give CofC the two-point lead.
• After the momentum-swinging sequence, the Cougars clamped down on defense, and Armstrong State went nearly seven minutes without a basket. In fact, ASU scored only seven points in the entire fourth quarter, five of which came in the final minute with the game already decided.
• Bolden emerged with an outstanding individual stat-line, posting a 22-12-5 with three steals and a block in 29 minutes. Her shooting was quite efficient as well, going 7 of 11 from the field and 5 of 6 from the stripe. On the other side of things, Armstrong State's Brigitta Barta had an outstanding first half, ultimately finishing with a 26-6 on 9 of 14 shooting and 8 of 9 shooting from the line.
• Nola Henry also played a key role for the Cougars, leading the team with five assists and four steals while adding six points. Dajah Logan did a little of everything too with a 7-6, adding a pair of steals and blocks.
"Armstrong State played an excellent game, and they really rattled us in the first half," head coach Candice M. Jackson said. "We really needed that push in the back for us to respond the way they did. With so many new faces, we're going to find that right lineup that can really gel together the way we want them to. That'll take a while. It was encouraging to see the ladies rally back, but we need to find a way to bring that kind of intensity for 40 minutes."
The Cougars will begin their season in earnest in 11 days when they play their first regular season matchup against the Charlotte 49ers. That contest is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. in TD Arena.
