CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (9-15; 4-9 vs. CAA) surrendered a big lead early in the game, and were never able to quite fight their way back Friday, as the Elon Phoenix (16-9; 9-5 vs. CAA) pulled away for the 54-38 win on Education Day.
TD Arena was deafening at opening tip, as over 1700 young fans packed the lower bowl for the day's proceedings. The noise softened early though as Elon flew out to a 13-2 advantage to start the game. The Cougars fought back before half, cutting the lead to four to head into the locker room with a mere 27-23 deficit.
Unfortunately, that's as close to the lead as The College would come, as they struggled mightily to find offense through the remainder of the game. The College was limited to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters, including six in the third and nine in the fourth.
Breanna Bolden finished the game with a team-high 13 points and three steals, while Jackie Luna-Castro had a solid outing with 12 points, four boards, a pair of blocks and a steal.
Both team's struggled to shoot the ball in all phases, and each team were reckless with the ball with CofC committing 20 turnovers to the Phoenix's 18. The game was ultimately decided in assists (17 vs. 6) and rebounds (55 vs. 33), where Elon had commanding edges. Individually, Autumn Carter led the way for the Phoenix with a 10-11 double-double, adding three blocks in just 20 minutes.
The Cougars will have just over 48 hours to shake off the loss before their next tilt, a home affair against William & Mary in their Play4Kay pink game. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
