HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (9-18; 4-12 vs. CAA rallied in the fourth quarter after falling down early to Hofstra, but the comeback effort fell short Sunday as the Pride (21-7; 12-5 vs. CAA) prevailed with a 66-54 win.
As has become standard for her this season, junior guard Breanna Bolden had another outstanding individual effort, scoring 15 points, eight rebounds, a block and five steals on the afternoon
Hofstra had a game-high lead of 18 points at the midway point of the fourth, leading 59-41. At that point, Bolden nearly brought the Cougars back herself, scoring ten straight points in a CofC 12-0 run which included two And-Ones. The junior did all this in just over two minutes of play.
Jackie Luna-Castro had a solid outing of her own with an 11-point, nine-rebound, two steal afternoon. Kelsey Booth submitted an admirable seven-point third quarter en route to a nine point, four rebound night, but struggled with foul-trouble and eventually picked up her fifth late in the final frame.
Hofstra's upperclassmen played an inspired afternoon with it being their Senior Game. Jakelle King-Gilchrist came out firing early, and finished with 14 points, while Darius Faulk pulled off a 12-11 double-double, adding six assists and five steals. Ashunae Durant had a 10-point, 16-rebound night of her own.
The College managed to win the turnover battle decisively with 15 to the Pride's 22, and also won in the steals department 13-9. However, Hofstra got to the free-throw line 25 times to CofC's nine, and out-shout the Cougars 40.4% vs. 31.9% from the field.
The College stands pat in eighth place as a result of the loss, thanks to losses from both UNCW (7-21; 3-14 vs. CAA) and Towson (6-22; 3-14 vs. CAA) elsewhere in conference play. The Pride meanwhile stay entrenched in second place.
The Cougars will return to the Lowcountry for their own Senior Game on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. They will face the UNCW Seahawks.
