ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The College of Charleston sailing team finished off another exceptional weekend with a first-place finish at the Mendelblatt Team Race hosted by Eckerd College.
Skippers Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.), Reed Baldridge (Clear Lake, Texas), Dodge Rees Pensacola, Fla.) and Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) sailed with crews Maura Lonergan (Dartmouth, Mass.), Bayley Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) and turned in an impressive undefeated record.
The Cougars defeated a field comprised of host Eckerd, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Jacksonville, Michigan, Miami (Fla.), Salve Regina, UC Santa Barbara and South Florida.
Meanwhile, the CofC women's sailing team placed third at the home-hosted Charleston Women's Regatta held at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) skippered A-Division with crews Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.), Caroline Bracken and Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.). Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.) and Clare Dahl (Newport Beach, Calif.) rotated skippering to win B-Division with crews Stuart and Bracken. Combined, the women finished just five points out of first with 136 points across both divisions, leaving them in third behind first-place Rhode Island (131 points) and second-place Georgetown (133 points).
“We utilized a multitude of our key players this weekend,” CofC Assistant Coach Mitch Hall said. “They excelled in the medium breeze, relying on the strength in their close-knit group to keep each other focused as the breeze built and the conditions changed. The Top 3 teams fought hard until the last race. We're happy with our performance and look forward to the rest of the spring.”
The Cougars will sail during spring break and host the Bob Bavier Team Race on Saturday, March 5 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex. They will also travel to the North Points #2 regatta hosted by Clemson on March 5 in Clemson, S.C.
