CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer program will face five teams that appeared in last year's NCAA Women's College Cup as well as tough non-conference foes from the SEC, Big 12 and ACC during the 2016 campaign.
“The 2016 schedule is one that will test our players each and every night next fall,” CofC Head Coach Christian Michner said. “We're playing some of the top teams from the best conferences around the country both home and away.”
The Cougars are coming off a season that included the program's best 11-game start since 2008, road wins at VCU and Radford and conference victories over Delaware and Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association play.
CofC will open the year with a home exhibition game slated against USC Upstate on Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. (ET) at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., before playing host to this year's edition of the Charleston Classic on Aug. 19 and 21, which will feature the likes of Virginia Tech, LSU and Mississippi State.
“Our opening weekend tournament, hosted at Patriots Point, may be the premier event in the country as we welcome Virginia Tech, LSU and Mississippi State to Charleston,” Michner said. “We wanted to push this group right out of the gate and we know that this schedule isn't easy, but it's one that will prepare us for the rigors of the CAA.”
The Cougars will continue to face tough non-conference competition at the University of Texas Tournament on Aug. 26 and 28 in Austin, Texas. There, they will take on host Texas on Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m. (CT) / 8:30 p.m. (ET) and Sam Houston State on Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. (CT) / 12 p.m. (ET).
Charleston will vie for its 19th-straight Silver Cup win against intercity rival Charleston Southern on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. (ET) at Patriots Point followed by non-conference road trips to Coastal Carolina on Sept. 4, The Citadel on Sept. 11 and Jacksonville on Sept. 15.
CofC will host Stetson on Sept. 9 and Radford on Sept. 18 at Patriots Point with kickoff set for 7 p.m. (ET) and 1 p.m. (ET) respectively.
The conference opener pits the Cougars against UNCW at home on Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. (ET). Last season, the CAA was ranked the sixth-best league in the country with four teams that advanced to the NCAA Women's College Cup in UNCW, Hofstra, James Madison and William & Mary.
“The CAA is widely-recognized as one of the top soccer conferences in the nation,” Michner said. “We've got to be battle-tested going into it. I am so excited for the fall season and the challenges that this schedule gives us. The Cougars will be ready come August.”
