CHARLESTON, S.C. – After a slow feeling-out process through the first 15 minutes of the game, the College of Charleston women's soccer team turned on the offense in their home exhibition against USC Upstate, outshooting the Spartans 21-6 en route to a 1-0 win.
• The freshman duo of Jessica Preedom and Talia Colchico connected in the second period at the 40' mark. Preedom received the pass from Colchico at the top of the box, and sailed what appeared to be a cross up over the defenders toward the net. The ball had other plans however, sailing past keeper Brooke Bailey on the far top corner for the lone goal of the game.
• The Cougars limited the Spartans to one shot on goal over the course of the game, spelling the shutout for senior keeper Lauren Killian.
• Of the Cougars' 21 shots, nine found their mark on target. Freshman Alyssa Beck and sophomore Laura Ortega led the charge with five shots each, combining for five shots on goal.
“It wasn't our night in terms of putting balls in the back of the net, but it feels good to get the win…good teams always find ways to win,” head coach Christian Michner said. “We created a lot of really good chances, and just came up unlucky at times. We'll need to work on our ability to finish.”
“Lauren Killian didn't have to do a lot in goal tonight, but we really prioritized getting her the shutout,” Michner said. “I was impressed with our freshman group coming in. I'm sure a few of them were nervous, but players like Jessica Preedom and Alyssa Beck played great for us.”
The Cougars will have the next week to fine-tune their approach before the Charleston Classic commences next weekend, starting with Friday's matchup with Mississippi State.
