Career Win No. 23 For Futrell As Cougars Win CSU Fall Invitational
9/13/2016 8:42:00 PM | Women's Golf
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's golf team won the CSU Fall Invitational tournament title, while senior Laura Fuenfstueck (Langen, Germany) claimed individual medalist honors shooting 3-under par on Tuesday at the Rivertowne Country Club.
Fuenfstueck shot rounds of 71, 72 and 70 and her victory ties former standout Steffi Kirchmayr for most individual victories in school history. Her 3-under tournament total matches her career-low tournament total (213) and ties for third all-time in the CofC record books.
"Congrats to Laura," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "She had a great battle with Shelby (Thompson) from Charleston Southern, who had won the last time we played in the CSU Invitational and Laura returned the favor this time. The two really spurred each other on and it was fun to watch. While a big congrats to our entire team. Mary Fran Hillow's second-round 69 helped us stay close going into the final round."
The team win also marked Futrell's 23rd career coaching victory at CofC. The Cougars' three-round total of 865 was a tournament record and marked the second-lowest 54-hole total in school history.
Graduate senior Mary Fran Hillow (Orlando, Fla.) tied for fifth shooting even par for the tournament, while freshman Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Meersbusch, Germany) tied for seventh at +4 and senior Vici Drechsler (Munich, Germany) tied for 13th at +6. The first and second rounds on Monday were delayed due to lightning.
"What an exciting afternoon for us," Futrell said. "Our team never gave up and played the final holes like the champions they are. I don't think there were ever more than three-or-four shots between us and Georgia Southern during the entire final round.
"Most of the time we were the ones behind, but in the end we hit the shots and made some important putts. It was a total team effort as everyone played well. We never had a time were someone was out of their round and not able to help the team."
CofC will next host the Cougar Classic on Oct. 2-4 at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.
