CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Sophomore Kennay Agnew (Columbia, S.C.) improved upon a pair of her own school records at the Art and Linda Maillet Open on Saturday – one of them twice – as the College of Charleston track and field team opened the 2017 indoor season in impressive fashion with several new school records and multiple new entries on the program's top-10 lists.
"I'm very proud of this group today," said head coach Amy Seago. "We fought hard and showed a great competitive spirit. Kennay did great work in improving our school records in both the 60 and the 200. She knows she has more she can do too. I thought our throwers had a particularly good day to make such improvements to our top 10 list in the shot put. Jenny Martin had a nice breakthrough in the long jump - starting the year off better than she finished the season in that event last year. Likewise, Tori and Ellen had significant improvements in the 5k. The freshmen were impressive and I liked what I saw from the as far as their fire and drive goes."
Agnew provided many of the headlines for the Cougars on Saturday, improving on her school record in the 60-meter dash by two hundredths with a mark of 7.85 seconds in the prelims before a time of 7.82 seconds in the finals handed her fourth place. She later added another record performance in the 200-meter dash, placing fifth with a time of 25.82 seconds.
Jenny Martin (Lansdale, Pa.) missed out on the 60-meter hurdle finals by one hundredth of a second with a mark of 9.38 seconds, while Holly Driver's (Darlington, Md.) time of 9.54 seconds placed her in eighth on the program's top-10 performers list. Tori Churchill (Greensboro, N.C.) and Ellen Feringa (Covington, La.) finished 1-2 in the 5,000-meter run with times of 17:48.98 and 17:57.22, respectively, as Churchill jumped from ninth to third on the top-10 list. Feringa stayed put in fifth despite setting a new PR by more than 16 seconds.
Martin posted a PR of 5.16 meters in the long jump to finish ninth, while Julisa Tindall (Rock Hill, S.C.) placed second in the high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters. Courtney Brooks (Rogersville, Tenn.) and Alex Coyle (Corunna, Ontario, Canada) finished 4-5 in the weight throw with marks of 12.39 and 12.08 meters, respectively.
Freshmen Simone Harris (Greenville, S.C.) and Asia Johnson (Aiken S.C.) each craved out a spot on the top 10 list in the shot put in third and fourth, respectively, with marks of 11.77 and 11.75 meters. Sarah Lynch (Chalfont, Pa.) and Coyle placed 10th and 11th with marks of 10.82 and 10.73 meters, respectively. Carlee Cassidy (Lindsay, Ontario, Canada) cruised to an easy win in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:22.48; the Cougars' 4x400-meter relay team of Katherine Linn (Newhall, Calif.), Emma Dupree (Charleston, S.C.), Brooke Dudley (Plano, Texas), and Driver posted a time of 4:15.47 to finish sixth.
The Cougars are back in action next Friday, January 20 at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C. for the first day of Appalachian State's Mountaineer Open.
