CHARLESTON, S.C. – Jamaal Walton has been named Associate Athletics Director for External Operations at College of Charleston and will officially start his post on March 7.
Walton is currently the Director of Marketing and Promotions at the University of Alabama – a post he has held since 2012. There, he supervises and oversees all marketing efforts for the Crimson Tide's 21-varsity sports program along with the Associate AD for Strategic Marketing.
Working closely with the development and implementation of marketing and promotional plans for football and men's basketball, Walton and his marketing and promotions team set a new men's basketball school record for average per game attendance (13,110 avg.) during the 2015-16 season. Men's basketball also ranked second in the nation in largest increase for average attendance from the previous year (10,176 avg.).
"We are excited to have Jamaal join the Cougar Family," College of Charleston Director of Athletics Matt Roberts said. "I've known him since our days together at Oklahoma and kept an eye on him during his time at Alabama. He has grown into one of the rising stars in our profession. He will be a great addition to our department and external team as we continue to grow our brand, while engaging the Charleston community in meaningful ways."
Prior to Alabama, Walton served as Assistant Director of Marketing and Promotions at the University of Oklahoma from 2010-12. There, he developed and implemented marketing and promotional plans for the baseball, volleyball and wrestling programs. OU generated the most season tickets sold for the 2012 baseball season since 2001 and gained the highest total attendance and average for the 2011 baseball season since 2004.
"I am so excited to join the Cougar Athletics Family and help make a difference for The College and the city of Charleston," Walton said. "I would like to thank Matt Roberts and the College of Charleston administration and staff for this wonderful opportunity. Thank you also to the University of Alabama Athletics staff, Athletics Director Bill Battle, and Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Marketing Brad Ledford, for preparing me for this next step in my career."
Originally from Virginia Beach, Va., Walton is a 2007 graduate of Virginia Military Institute earning a bachelor's degree in biology. He later completed his master's degree coursework in integrated marketing and communication at Florida State University in December of 2008.
A former student-athlete, Walton played cornerback on the VMI football team from 2003-06 and served as team captain and class president. He was the recipient of the prestigious General George Catlett Marshall VMI Class of 1901 Citizen-Soldier Award for displaying excellence of character, integrity, dedication, determination and loyalty in every facet of the VMI experience and the closest cadet to parallel the cadetship of General Marshall during his four years. Walton was also honored with the R.L. Pulliam Award and Lemuel Mackennie Long Jarman Award for exemplary academics, high character and conduct.
Post-graduation, he started his career in college athletics as an intern for Seminole ISP at Florida State University (2008), Assistant to the Athletic Director at Savannah State University (2009) and marketing assistant at the University of Tennessee (2009-10).
Walton is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) and has served on several different committees within the organization since 2010.
