MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team won two regattas and finished second in a third to cap a phenomenal weekend of sailing on Sunday afternoon, as the Cougars finished first in both the North Points #2 and the Bob Bavier Team Race while coming in two points shy of first place at the ODU Women's Interconference.
At the North Points #2 on Saturday in Clemson, S.C., the Cougars cruised to an 11-point victory with 18 points in 10 races. In A-Division, freshman skipper Will Martens (San Rafael, Calif.) and freshman crew Keely Gregg (Skaneateles, N.Y.) tallied six points – one shy of the minimum – while freshman skipper Kelly-Ann Arrindell (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) and freshman crew Anna Cornetta (Norfolk, Va.) accumulated 12 points for a team total of 18.
The Cougars added a second regatta win at the Bob Bavier Team Race on Sunday at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex, compiling an 18-3 record during the two-day event – including a 2-1 mark against Navy, Dartmouth, and Georgetown in the final four to claim the team title. Three tandems represented the Cougars at The Bob – junior skipper Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) and junior crew Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.); senior Jack Cusick (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior crew Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.); and junior skipper Christophe Killian (Newport Beach, Calif.) and junior crew Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.).
"It's been a great weekend for the team," said Peschiera. "We have been working hard with the help of our coaches and the rest of the Cougars in order to be ready for the season. This is our first TR regatta with this team and I am glad it went well. We know there are plenty of things that we can work on to get better and better every day. We are happy with the results and are looking forward to the upcoming season!"
In the final event of the weekend, the Cougars finished two points behind Yale at the ODU Women's Interconference in Norfolk, Va. The Cougars totaled 91 points to Yale's 89, including a regatta-best 47 tallies in B-Division. Junior skipper Paris Henken (Coronado, Calif.) and senior crew Irene Abascal (Guatemala City, Guatemala) accumulated 44 points in A-Division, while freshman Allie Toppa skippered the Cougars to 47 points in B-Division with the crew duo of sophomores Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) and Caroline Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.).
"I'm very pleased with our performance this weekend," said assistant coach Mitch Hall. "We showed our versatility over a range of conditions and battled back from a few bad starts. We're looking forward to capitalizing on a few unforced errors at our next event."
The Cougars will compete in five regattas next weekend: the Harbor Cup Offshore on Mar. 10-12 in Los Angeles, Calif.; the Navy Spring Women's on Mar. 11-12 in Annapolis, Md.; the Charleston Coed on Mar. 11-12 at the J.
