CHARLESTON, S.C. – The three-time defending champion College of Charleston men's golf team will compete for another Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship title on April 21-23 at the Salisbury Country Club located just outside of Richmond in Midlothian, Va.
The Cougars enter the tournament as the highest-ranked team in the league at No. 63 in the latest Golfstat.com rankings ahead of No. 72 UNCW and No. 77 James Madison. They also boast the league's top golfer in senior All-American William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.), who will make his fourth-straight CAA Tournament start with a stroke average of 71.70. Rainey is currently ranked No. 63 nationally and is the defending individual champion.
The 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship Individual Finalist will be joined in the starting lineup by senior Parker Derby (Columbus, Ga.), senior Philip Oweida (Charlotte, N.C.), freshman Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) and freshman Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.).
"We've been talking about this week ever since our freshmen came onto campus for summer school," CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "They know what this week means and we are ready to go out and compete for another conference championship title."
Eighteen holes will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the winner earning the league's automatic NCAA bid. Tee times will be off the No. 1 on Friday and Saturday at 8 a.m. (ET) and split tee times off the No. 1 and No. 10 on Sunday at 8 a.m. (ET).
"Our lineup will have three experienced seniors (Rainey, Derby and Oweida), who were on our championship team last year," McEntire said. "William has played in all three CAA Championships for us and has a chance to be the conference player of the year. This is an award he has been working toward since last year and would be a great way to finish out his outstanding Cougar career. Rounding out our lineup will be freshman Hunter Dunagan and Michael Sass. With a good weekend, both will have a chance to grab Rookie of the Year honors. This is a big week for us and we look forward to the challenge."
The Cougars will be paired with Delaware and Elon and tee-off the No. 1 tomorrow at 8 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com
