JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- The College of Charleston sailing team continued its stellar fall season with victories at the South Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association (SAISA) Fall Women's and Coed championships this weekend thanks to several dominating individual and team performances.
The Cougars finished atop both A- and B-Division at the SAISA Fall Women's Championship to win the regatta by 18 points over host Jacksonville. Junior skipper Alie Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and senior crew Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) never finished lower than second and won six races to claim the top spot in A-Division with 14 points. Junior Liza Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) skippered the Cougars to a two-point win in B-Division alongside senior crew Caroline Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.).
Charleston turned in another dominating performance at the SAISA Fall Coed Championship on Sunday, winning the nine-rotation regatta by 36 points over Eckerd and Jacksonville. The Cougars totaled 44 points from 18 races, and finished in the top five in all but one race throughout the regatta.
Sophomore skipper Jack Brown (Newtown Square, Pa.) and Bracken won A-Division by nine points over Eckerd with a trio of race wins. Alie Toppa and Carrington continued their impressive weekend – and season – with a 16-point win over South Florida in B-Division with 20 points from nine races.
The Cougars will compete for more championships next weekend, as Gerald Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China), Benn Smith (Bermuda), and Kelly-Ann Arrindell (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) set sail at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Men's and Women's Singlehanded National Championships on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
