CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team embarks on a pair of road trips this weekend, with the Cougars' top singlehanded sailors making the trek to Grand Rapids, Mich. for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Men's and Women's Singlehanded National Championships, and the offshore team traveling to Annapolis, Md. for the Kennedy Cup. Both regattas will be contested over two days on Saturday, Nov. 3, and Sunday, Nov. 4.
Gerald Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China), Benn Smith (Bermuda), and Kelly-Ann Arrindell (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) will look to bring home some coveted hardware as they compete for the first national championships of the 2018-19 season at the ICSA Men's and Women's Singlehanded National Championships.
Williams enters the weekend as one of the top contenders and favorites to take home the Glen S. Foster Trophy after finishing second at last year's nationals and dominating the field at SAISA Men's Singlehanded Championships earlier this fall. The senior will be joined in the men's event by Smith, who placed second at the SAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship.
Arrindell is the Cougars' lone representative in the women's fleet after she finished second at the SAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship. The junior will look to improve on her third-place performance from last season's ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship.
In the Cougars' second regatta of the weekend, the offshore team will look to improve on its fifth-place finish last fall at the Kennedy Cup. Sailing for the Cougars will be senior driver William Comerford (Annapolis, Md.) alongside a crew compliment of: sophomore Emily Essi (Cleveland, Ohio), senior Sarah Wilkinson (Mystic, Conn.), junior Sam Tobio (Sarasota, Fla.), senior Franny Schulte (Birmingham, Mich.), junior Key Becker, sophomore Burke Anvari (Westport, Conn.) and senior William Hundahl (Marblehead, Mass.) with junior Jordan Wiggins (York, S.C.) at alternate.
