
Larchmont Win Highlights Strong Weekend for Cougars

LARCHMONT, N.Y. --- The College of Charleston sailing team claimed its sixth regatta victory of the season with a dominating performance at the Larchmont Offshore, and finished second at the Stu Nelson Women's to cap another strong weekend.
"It was a challenging weekend on the Charles [at the Stu Nelson Women's]," said head coach Ward Cromwell. "We did what we needed to, and qualified for the fall showcase finals at St. Mary's in two weeks."
The Cougars collected five wins from five races to win the Class 5 J/105 by 11 points over Vanderbilt at the Latchmont Offshore on Saturday and Sunday in Larchmont, N.Y. Sailing for the Cougars were: senior driver William Comerford (Annapolis, Md.), senior main William Hundahl (Marblehead, Mass.), junior primary Sam Tobio (Sarasota, Fla.), senior pit Franny Schulte (Birmingham, Mich.), sophomore mast Graham Post (East Grand Rapids, Mich.), and junior bow Key Becker.
Charleston added a second-place finish at the Stu Nelson Women's in New London, Conn. on Saturday and Sunday. The Cougars finished the nine-rotation regatta eight points behind first-place Yale with 79 points. Junior skipper Allie Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and senior crew Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) delivered a 13-point win in A-Division with 28 points.
The Cougars accumulated 51 points in B-Division, with junior Liza Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) skippering the first eight races alongside senior crew Caroline Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.). Senior Elizabeth Mignon (Bay Head, N.J.) took the helm for the final race with Liza Toppa on board to crew.
Charleston wrapped the weekend with a seventh-place finish at the Coed Showcase Semifinals on Saturday and Sunday in Boston, Mass. to qualify for the Coed Showcase Finals in St. Mary's, Md. on October 20 and 21. The Cougars finished with 251 points, including a seventh-place showing in A-Division. Senior Augie Dale (Pewaukee, Wis.) skippered A-Division alongside junior crew Katie Lounsbury (Jensen Beach, Fla.), with sophomore skipper Jack Brown (Newtown Square, Pa.) and sophomore crew (Mary Morano (Edgartown, Mass.) sailing in B-Division.
Three regattas are on the schedule for the Cougars next weekend: North Points #4 on Saturday, October 13 in Atlanta, Ga.; the Women's Showcase Finals on Saturday and Sunday in Providence, R.I.; and the Oyster Bowl on Saturday and Sunday in St. Mary's, Md.
