CHARLESTON, S.C. - In a collaboration with Trident United Way, the College of Charleston's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and CofC athletic department will serve its community during the Cougars' Day of Service on Tuesday, Dec. 4 as part of the College's #comeCus campaign.
"Our student-athletes, coaches, and staff are excited to get out in the Charleston Community and practice one of our core values – service," College of Charleston Athletics Director Matt Roberts said. "Our teams do a great job throughout the year with their individual community service projects, and the Cougars' Day of Service will bring the entire CofC Athletics Family together to give back to our city."
The Cougars will split into several groups and disperse among eight locations around the Charleston area to take part in a variety of service projects from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The projects have been organized by Trident United Way, which promotes a culture of volunteerism by engaging its partners and individual volunteers through valuable service opportunities.
"The response from College of Charleston's athletics department and its student-athletes has been fantastic," Trident United Way Director of Strategic Volunteer Engagement Melissa Britton said. "It's great to see more than 250 staff and student-athletes have signed up to take part in Cougars' Day of Service and we hope this will spur them to a lifetime of volunteer service."
Groups will spend the morning engaging in service activities across the Lowcountry. The Cougars, SAAC, and Trident United Way have partnered with several local agencies and service organizations including Sanders Clyde and Memminger Elementary Schools, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, Charleston Area Senior Center, Lowcountry Food Bank, and Tricounty Family Ministries.
One group will also be assembling kits containing basic hygiene products or a variety of snacks at TD Arena, while other volunteers will make cards for Camp Happy Days and bookmarks for Read Across America.
