CHARLESTON, S.C. – In celebration of Black History Month and 50 years of integration at the College of Charleston, the College and its Department of Athletics will honor Cougar Trailblazers at the final men's basketball regular-season home game against Elon on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena.
Each of the four trailblazers will be honored for his or her impact on athletics and at the College of Charleston. They will be accompanied by a current student-athlete of color to represent the past and present moving together towards continued success at the College.
This distinguished group of pioneers includes CofC Athletics Hall of Famer Remus Harper ('72), who was the first black student-athlete to play at CofC under former head coach Fred Daniels from 1969 to 72. He was a standout on the basketball court and in the classroom, graduating in four years with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Harper also served as team captain and class valedictorian.
Current CofC Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Otto German ('73), the second black student-athlete to receive a full basketball scholarship and graduate from the College of Charleston, will be honored along with trailblazers Carrie (Nesbitt) Gibbs ('72) and Linda Dingle Gadson ('72), the first and second black female graduates of the College of Charleston, respectively.
German is in his 44th year of service at his alma mater and was a four-year letter winner from 1970 to 73. He was an all-conference selection in 1970 and earned his bachelor's degree in elementary education. German assumed his current post within the Department of Athletics in 1992 and was the recipient of the Eddie Ganaway Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009.
