Three Wins Highlight Busy Weekend For Cougars

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team put their depth on full display this past weekend with three wins out of five regattas – including a dominating performance at the Navy Spring Women's behind a 28-point victory in B-Division from Paris Henken (Coronado, Calif.) and Liza Toppa.
The Cougars opened the weekend with a 21-point win at the North Points #3 in Columbia, S.C. Will Martens (San Rafael, Calif.) and Keely Gregg (Skaneateles, N.Y.) finished at the top of A-Division with seven points, while Ryan Ratliffe and Mary Morano (Edgartown, Mass.) won each of their six races for the minimum six points.
At the Navy Spring Women's in Annapolis, Md., the Cougars delivered a masterful team performance with 156 points – 57 points better than second-place Coast Guard. Henken and Liza Toppa collected nine top-five finishes, including four wins, to emerge victorious from B-Division with 77 points. Alie Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) finished second and two points behind Coast Guard in A-Division with 79 points.
Charleston picked up its third win of the weekend at the Charleston Spring Race with a two-day total of 59 points to finish 36 points ahead of second-place South Florida. Patrick Shannon (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Gerald Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China) split skipper duties in A-Division alongside crew Laura Masterson (Kemah, Texas), as the Cougars topped the division with 29 points. Lawson Willard and Mac Dickson sailed to a first-place finish in B-Division with 33 points.
The Cougars also placed fourth at the Charleston Spring Race as well with an all-female team. Kelly-Ann Arrindell (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) and Anna Cornetta (Norfolk, Va.) sailed to a 60-point total in A-Division, while Marian Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China) and Clare Perry (Wilmette, Ill.) finished fifth in B-Division with 49 points.
Jordan Wiggins (York, S.C.), William Hundahl (Marblehead, Mass.), William Comerford (Annapolis, Md.), Sam Tobio (Sarasota, Fla.), Sarah Wilkinson (Mystic, Conn.), Emily Essi (Cleveland, Ohio), and Graham Post sailed to a fifth-place showing at the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup in Los Angeles, Calif. with a total of 50 points. The Cougars finished in the top five in six of the 11 races, including a win in race 10.
The Cougars capped the weekend with a sixth-place finish at the Rudkin Team Race in St. Petersburg, Fla. with a 6-8 record. Skippers Augie Dale (Pewaukee, Wis.), Jack Brown (Newtown Square, Pa.), Steven Leuck (San Diego, Calif.), and Carter Cameron (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) teamed with crew Katie Lounsbury (Jensen Beach, Fla.), Oliver Parsons (Stonington, Conn.), and Payton Alexander to represent The College. After posting a 2-5 record in round one, the Cougars went 4-3 in round two with wins against Eckerd, Boston College, Boston University, and Yale.
Charleston returns to action next weekend with three regattas on the schedule: North Points #4 in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday, March 17; St. Mary's Women's in St. Mary's, Md. on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18; and the Graham Hall Team Race on Saturday and Sunday in Annapolis, Md.
