Cougars Split With No. 19 Tulane, Missouri State On Friday

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The No. 20 College of Charleston beach volleyball team split a pair of duals with No. 19 Tulane and Missouri State on Friday at the Palmetto Invitational. After falling to Tulane, 4-1, in the morning session, the Cougars bounced back with a 4-1 win over Missouri State in the afternoon.
With the win over Missouri State (7-8), College of Charleston (14-7) extended its single-season wins record to 14. Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) and Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) went 2-0 on the day with two wins at fours.
Beckman and Freed recorded the Cougars' lone point against Tulane in the morning session with a 21-15, 20-22, 15-11 win at fours. Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) and Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.) pushed the Green Wave to three sets at threes with a 21-8 second-set victory, before dropping set three, 15-11. Britney Vallez (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and Lauren Hollman (Union, Ky.) won set one, 21-12, at sixes before falling in the final two sets by scores of 22-20 and 15-10.
The Cougars rebounded with a 4-1 win over Missouri State in the afternoon session. After Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) and McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) got the Cougars off the mark with a 21-10, 21-10 win at twos, Beckman and Freed pushed the lead to 2-0 with a 21-13, 21-16 victory at fours. Brennan and Madison delivered the deciding point at threes with a 21-12, 21-11 win, while Taylor Foley (Agoura Hills, Calif.) and Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) rallied for a 16-21, 21-7, 15-11 victory at fives. Vallez and Hollman won at sixes, 21-12, 21-14.
The Cougars return to the sand on Saturday for the final day of the Palmetto Invitational. Charleston will square off with Coastal Carolina at 3:00 pm, followed by a 5:00 pm match against No. 9 and host South Carolina.
