Cougars Claim SAISA Women's, Finish Third At Admiral's Cup

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- Alie Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) skippered the College of Charleston sailing team to a nine-point win in A-Division as the Cougars captured the SAISA Women's Championship to book a ticket to nationals next month. The Cougars also placed third at the Admiral's Cup in New York, N.Y., finishing 16 points out of first.
Toppa teamed with Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) and Caroline Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.) to post 14 points from nine races in A-Division at the SAISA Women's, held at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex on Saturday, April 21. Toppa sailed with Carrington in the first three races, and Bracken for the final six, with the trio never finishing lower than third. Paris Henken (Coronado, Calif.) skippered the Cougars to 19 points and a second-place finish in B-Division alongside Liza Toppa and Elizabeth Mignon (Bay Head, N.J.). The trio combined for six wins in nine races.
The Cougars continued their strong weekend with a third-place performance at the Admiral's Cup in New York, N.Y. on Saturday and Sunday, finishing the regatta with 110 points – three behind second-place Yale. Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) and Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) placed fourth in A-Division with 57 points, two behind third-place Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Augie Dale (Pewaukee, Wis.) and Katie Lounsbury (Jensen Beach, Fla.) finished second in B-Division with 53 points.
Charleston will next sail in the ICSA National Championships, which begin with the women's championship on Tuesday, May 22 through Friday, May 25in Norfolk, Va. The Team Race National Championship will follow on Saturday, May 26 through Monday, May 28, with the Coed National Championship closing out the season on Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1.
