SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The College of Charleston battled challenging conditions and a talented field at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Men's Singlehanded National Championship over the weekend as Benn Smith and Steven Leuck were unable to overcome slow starts en route to finishes of 13th and 14th respectively.
"We are proud of the efforts put forth by Smith and Lueck at singlehanded nationals this weekend in Santa Barbara," Director of Sailing Kevin Jewett said. "Benn qualified and competed for a second time this year despite some health challenges and we expect him to be in peak form for his senior year."
Smith finished 15 points out of the top-10 in 13th with a total of 155 points from 14 races. The junior turned in four top-10 performances highlighted by a sixth-place finish in the opening race. Leuck placed 14th with 159 points including six finishes in the top 10.
"Steven is very focused as one of our top doublehanded sailors, so this was a bit of a bonus for him," continued Jewett. "He was able to beat runner-up Richard McCann in our regional qualifiers, but the conditions this weekend were not conducive to his gifts as a tactician and strategist. Both will take this experience home and build on it through the coming season to help us peak at the dinghy national championships in New Orleans this spring."
The Cougars will resume their 2019-2020 schedule on Saturday, Jan. 4 and Sunday, Jan. 5 in Newport Beach, Calif. at the Rose Bowl.
