KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – College of Charleston shot 14-under par with a flurry of birdies on its finishing holes to close out the fall season as team runner-up at the Charleston Southern-hosted Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point on Tuesday.
Led by senior Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) and his individual runner-up finish, the Cougars carded a 274 to move past Augusta on the final day of tournament play at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Turtle Point course. It was one of the Top 15 lowest team rounds in program history.
Dunagan shot a near bogey-free round with birdies on six of his last nine holes of the tournament. He fired a season-low, final-round 6-under 66 to finish (-10) – three shots shy of individual medalist and No. 88-ranked Jovan Rebula of Auburn (-13).
The 121-player field included four Top 100-ranked players. Senior Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) also finished strong with a final-round 67 with six birdies. He tied No. 71-ranked Isaiah Jackson of Memphis for fourth (-6).
Senior Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) followed Dunagan's and Sowell's lead with an under-par round of his own with a 3-under 69 with five birdies. He tied for 13th (-2), while freshman Luke Hackworth (Charlotte, N.C.) was the fourth counting score during the final round, shooting even par with five birdies on Tuesday.
"Today was a round that took its time to evolve, but really ended with a barrage of birdies," CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "It was fun to be out there witnessing our guys doing what they love. In the end, I would say it was the best round of our fall and a great way to lead into the winter break."
No. 24-ranked Auburn won the team tournament title with a three-round score of 833 (-31) followed by runner-up CofC with a 54-hole total of 848 (-16). Augusta was third (-10), Jacksonville State fourth (-2) and No. 47-ranked Memphis fifth (+1) in the 21-team field.
CofC will return to action in the New Year at the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue on Feb. 16-17, 2020, at the Wyndum Rio Mar Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
