RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – College of Charleston senior Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) claimed his first collegiate tournament win shooting a final-round 71 on Tuesday at the Puerto Rico Classic held at the par-72 River Course located on the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf & Beach Resort.
The 2019 Colonial Athletic Association First Team selection and 2019 NCAA Regionals qualifier shot rounds of 71, 65 and 71 to finish the three-day tournament hosted by Purdue atop the individual leaderboard at 9-under par. Ten Top 100-ranked collegiate golfers were in the 75-player field including four in the Top 20. Sowell tied No. 7-ranked Garett Reband of Oklahoma and Bartley Forrester of Georgia Tech for co-medalist honors.
Sowell was the 36-hole co-leader going into the final round and birdied the 5th, 8th, 11th and 18th holes to secure the victory. It marked his sixth Top-5 finish of his career at The College
"Logan Sowell earning his first collegiate win, in arguably the strongest field he has ever competed in, is a testament to his drive," CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "Logan and I have often spoken of getting in the winner's circle and to do so, while having the entire field chase his lead, all is something I know he will never forget."
Senior Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) closed out the tournament firing a 4-under par 68 with six birdies to tie for ninth individually (-6). It was his ninth Top-10 finish of his career.
As a team, the Cougars shot 2-under on the final day of tournament play to place seventh overall with a three-round score of 864 (E). They finished ahead of Purdue, NC State, Marquette, Iowa, Maryland, No. 27 Tennessee, Ohio State and East Carolina.
No. 3-ranked Georgia Tech won the team title with an 832 (-32) followed by No. 2 Oklahoma as runner-up (-30). No. 18 Georgia placed third (-19), No. 50 Alabama fourth (-16), No. 23 Clemson fifth (-9) and No. 34 Ole Miss sixth (-8).
"From a team perspective, this week was a big step forward," Krywulycz said. "We had a tough start to the tournament, but hung in there and played some quality team golf today, to get valuable wins over quality SEC, ACC and Big Ten teams."
The Cougars will compete next at The Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern on March 13-15 at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
