HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. --- Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) and
McKala Rhodes' (Charleston, S.C.) run in the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships ended in the quarterfinals on Friday as two pairs from the College of Charleston finished in the top 10.
"I am so proud of both pairs," head coach
Jason Kepner said. "They really battled to the very end. It is too bad they had to play each other in the elimination round, but finishing the season with two pairs in the top ten in the country is awesome for our program and CofC."
Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) and
Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) punched their ticket to the round of 16 with a 21-16, 21-17 win over Arizona State's duo of Ashley Wenz and Olly Okaro, who played much of the season in the first flight for the Sun Devils. The win matched Freed and Manusky against their teammates, Rachel and Rhodes, in the round of 16.
Rachel and Rhodes took the match by scores of 21-18 and 21-14 to advance to the quarterfinals as Freed and Manusky finished the championship in ninth. The senior duo would face Loyola Marymount's fourth-seeded pairing of Emma Doud and Savannah Slattery in the quarterfinals. Rachel and Rhodes battled until the final point in a 14-21, 24-26 setback to finish the championship in fifth.
