ATHENS, Ga. – College of Charleston junior Logan Sowell had high hopes of reaching the NCAA Championship as the final day of the NCAA Athens Regional began.
However, he saw them fade as he made the turn after a rough start on Wednesday at the UGA Golf Course.
"I think nerves might have had a little bit to do with it," said Sowell following his final round. "I felt like I had a chance to maybe qualify for the NCAA Championship. But after I was eight holes in, I knew I was out of it."
After entering the day tied for 15th overall and 1-over par, four bogeys plagued his chances of advancing to nationals. He would finish the tournament 3-over-par and tied for 18th.
The All-Colonial Athletic Association First Team selection finished with rounds of 73, 70 and 73 respectively. CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz was pleased with Sowell's performance this week and said a Top 20 result for him was a solid tournament.
"In general, he played very much the way he normally does," Krywulycz said. "He hit a lot of greens. He probably didn't drive it as well as he normally does. He fought really well and kept himself in it."
Both Krywulycz and Sowell said that while he struggled when driving the ball off the tee, his putting success was the most encouraging part of his game.
"I hit a lot of balls in the rough early," Sowell said. "I missed a lot of fairways, which is a little uncharacteristic of myself. I actually putted well, which is normally the issue."
Sowell had difficulties driving the ball on the front nine throughout the three-day tournament. He totaled seven bogeys this week on those holes.
"He just didn't find enough fairways early on," said Krywulycz on the front nine holes. "There were a couple of tee shots that he didn't necessarily love. They just don't fit his eye."
Sowell and Krywulycz both said the fifth hole was tricky throughout the tournament. He bogeyed the par-5 hole in two of the three rounds.
Despite the rough start, he finished strong down the stretch on Wednesday. A birdie on the 12th hole jump-started a run of parring the remaining six holes. He finished the round at 2-over par.
Going into the offseason, Sowell said he is excited and knows what he needs to work on. Both he and his coach said that this experience will help him build confidence going into his senior season.
"Going into today, I really felt like I had a chance, but I didn't play like I wanted to," Sowell said. "I felt like I could compete out here with these guys."
Krywulycz said that he hopes to be back next year to compete as a team in a NCAA Regional tournament.
"We try to develop our players individually," he said. "We will set our standards pretty high next year. I think we can improve our ranking a lot and try to have some people take notice of us."
The Cougars' entire roster will be returning next year including Sowell and junior Michael Sass, an All-CAA Second Team selection and individual runner-up at this year's CAA Championship. Sass competed at the NCAA Bryan (Texas) regional last year and finished tied for 28th. Krywulycz also said that he expects to have three freshmen join the team.
The Cougars came up just short of qualifying for regionals as a team this season after finishing second to UNCW at the conference tournament. Sowell said the team just needs to focus on finishing the job.
"I think we are going to be really good," he said. "We will be hungry. I felt like we were the favorites going into the conference tournament and I feel like we will be again next year."
Sowell said he would take some time off from golf before preparing for summer tournaments. This regional marked his 10th tournament of the season and his eighth Top-20 finish.
