HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. --- Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) and McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) fought back from a 1-0 deficit in both of their matches on Thursday to win Pool G and earn a bye into Friday's round of 16 at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships.
Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) and Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) advanced to Friday's playoff as well, securing a spot in the round of 24 following a forfeit in Pool F's third-place match. The duo fell to Lindsey Calvin and Lindsey Knudsen of Saint Mary's 21-13, 21-13 in their first match of the day. Freed and Manusky will face Arizona State's tandem of Ashley Wenz and Oluoma Okaro on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. PT on Court 2 with a berth in the round of 16 on the line.
Rachel and Rhodes won both of their matches in three sets to secure the top spot in Pool G. After rallying for a 23-25, 21-11, 15-12 win over Florida State's duo of Kate Privett and Macy Jerger, the pair won Pool G with a 19-21, 21-16, 15-7 victory against Elly Lundberg and Katelyn Carballo of Arizona State. They receive a bye into the round of 16 where they will face the winner of tomorrow morning's match between Freed/Manusky and Wenz/Okaro at 12:00 p.m. PT on Court 2. The winner of that contest will advance to the quarterfinals at 3:00 p.m. PT.
"It was great to have both teams advance today and secure a spot in the playoffs," head coach Jason Kepner said. "Both teams played some high-level volleyball and I look forward to them continuing their push toward a championship. For College of Charleston to have two pairs in the top 24 in the nation at this event is great for our program."
