CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Academic Coordinator for Student-Athlete Academic Services Remy Starker '14 was honored by the College of Charleston Staff Advisory Committee (SAC) as the College's Temporary Employee of the Year at the committee's annual lunch and awards presentation on Wednesday.
The SAC hands out three staff awards at its annual Staff Celebration Lunch and Awards Presentation honoring a Permanent Staff Employee of the Year, Temporary Staff Employee of the Year and Outstanding Staff Member Presidential Service Award.
Starker has proved to be an invaluable asset in Student-Athlete Academic Services since her appointment in 2017. She serves as the academic advisor for the women's soccer, track and field and cross country programs as well as the academic contact for the national championship sailing team. The Madison, N.J. native also assists in all aspects of the academic advising department with an emphasis on administration and programing.
"I appreciate the Staff Advisory Committee recognizing Remy for her contributions to the Athletics Department and to the College," said Kate Tiller, Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Academic Services. "Remy goes above and beyond in her work on a daily basis, and our student-athletes benefit from her valuable mentorship. She empowers them to make their own good decisions, to think for themselves and to reach for their own goals. Remy has not stopped making an impact since she began her work with Student-Athlete Academic Services two years ago."
Starker was instrumental in organizing and managing the first-ever Cougars' Day of Service this past fall during which more than 300 members of the athletics department came together to volunteer at 12 local agencies. She has also played a crucial role in overhauling and overseeing the Paws to Claws and Student-Athlete 101 programs which help transition our incoming freshman to life as CofC student-athletes. Starker has tirelessly helped dozens of student-athletes achieve numerous personal-bests in the classroom as well.
The Temporary Staff Employee of the Year is awarded to a nominee who: a) makes contributions to further the College's core values (integrity, academic excellence, liberal arts education, respect for the individual student, diversity, community, and public mission); b) develops and/or implements improved effectiveness of work processes to better serve the College community; c) exhibits exceptional customer service; and d) has made other specific contributions to the success of their office and to the greater College community.
