Cougars Take Bark Out of Terriers in Home Opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston raced to a 19-point halftime lead, built the margin to as many as 27 in the third quarter and defeated Wofford, 69-61, on Sunday at TD Arena.
Madison Taylor led all scorers with 15 points, and freshman Chelsea Wooten connected on 4 of 6 from long distance to finish with 14 points in only 17 minutes of action. Fellow newcomer Tyler Gray was the third Cougar in double figures with 10.
Reigning CAA rebounding champion Arynn Eady had 11 boards, scored nine points and blocked two shots, and Tyler Collins dished out six assists. Alexis Tomlin and Niyah Lutz led the Terriers (1-1) with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
CofC (1-1) never trailed, leading by 10 after one before Wooten hit three 3-pointers and added two free throws in the opening 4:19 of the second to help the Cougars build a 33-14 cushion. Wooten finished her explosion with another 3 in the final minute of the half for a 41-22 margin at the break.
A free throw by Gray with 7:11 left in the third gave the Cougars their largest lead of the game at 51-24. Wofford used a 20-6 run to pull within 13 by the end of the period and got within six twice in the fourth, but two buckets by Eady sealed the win.
Amira Williams helped on the glass with six rebounds, and Lexi Maddox pulled down five. The Cougars forced 19 Wofford turnovers with Taylor making a pair of steals.
CofC returns to action next Sunday at Clemson in a 2 p.m. tipoff. The Cougars return home on December 8 against Winthrop.
