CHARLESTON, S.C. – A total of 80 current and former student-athletes and 21 members of athletic department support groups graduated from the College of Charleston.
This year's scholar athletes included French, special education, business administration, sociology, psychology, arts management, finance, political science, biology, exercise science, public health, economics, communication, marketing, supply chain management, computer information systems, commercial real estate finance, hospitality & tourism management, accounting and international studies majors.
The diverse group also hailed from 17 different states that included California, Colorado, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina as well as four countries that included Argentina, Japan, Germany and Canada.
Six were members of the CofC Honors College including Elif Caynak (Fort Mill, S.C.) of equestrian, MacKenzie Daniels (Hatfield, Pa.) of women's soccer, Stephanie Hustad (Lansdale, Pa.) of equestrian, Kris Kuhn (Summerville, S.C.) of baseball, Sam Tobio (Sarasota, Fla.) of offshore sailing and Will Whitmore (Norfolk, Va.) of sailing.
The Class of 2020 was highlighted by Grant Riller (Orlando, Fla.) of men's basketball, who closed out his storied career at The College ranked second all-time in career scoring with 2,474 points – the third-most all-time in Colonial Athletic Association history. He helped lead the Cougars to a conference title and an NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time in 19 years in 2018 and was a three-time All-CAA First Team selection. A top prospect in the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft, Riller earned his bachelor's degree in sociology.
Former women's golfer Anna Buchanan (Athens, Ga.) earned her master's degree in business administration, one year after completing her playing career with the Cougars and graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 2018.
All benefited from the academic support and guidance from the CofC Student-Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) staff headed up by Assistant Athletics Director Kate Tiller, associate director Keri McGee, assistant director Lizzy Lesley and academic coordinator Clarke Allen.
"One of the absolute best days of the year is commencement, and even though we won't be celebrating it in May for this class, it makes their accomplishments no less exciting," Tiller said. "My staff and I are so proud of these seniors, and all of our student-athletes actually, for how they approached a dramatic change in their lives this semester. While my staff, the greater athletics department staff, and our coaches may have provided support, our student-athletes provided us with smiles and a refreshing resilience that strengthened us.
"As in any year, I am grateful for our student-athletes' families, faculty and staff (in athletics and on campus) and our coaches, for fostering growth in our student-athletes and helping them to achieve the milestone of earning a college degree."
The majority of CofC's graduating student-athletes also benefited from scholarship funding throughout their academic and athletic careers provided by The Charleston Athletic Fund, the athletic department's primary fundraising arm, and its members. If you would like to become a member to help continue to support student-athlete scholarships, please contact The Charleston Athletic Fund by phone or e-mail at: (843) 953-8255 or cougarclub.cofc.edu
