CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former professional baseball player and inspirational speaker Chris Singleton spoke to more than 350 College of Charleston student-athletes in addition to coaches and staff about "Overcoming Adversity & Using Your Platform for Unity."
A Charleston native and former baseball student-athlete at Charleston Southern University, Singleton inspired the nation with his forgiveness and "love is stronger than hate" response after his mother, Sharonda Coleman Singleton, along with eight other victims of Mother Emanuel AME Church, were murdered in 2015.
Singleton shared his personal experiences of adversity and his belief that God can guide you through any storm you will ever pass with his CofC audience on Sept. 21. He hopes that after hearing his story, student-athletes, coaches and staff left inspired to continue to love thy neighbor.
"Speaking to inspire love and unity is always an honor," Singleton said. "But, to be able to do that with athletes in my own hometown was a pleasure. I am grateful for all of the responses that I received and am still having conversations with some of the student-athletes to help them continue to grow."
Singleton was chosen as a guest speaker by CofC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in partnership with the athletics department's Inclusion, Equity & Diversity Action Council (IEDAC).
