CHARLESTON, S.C. – For Dalton Bolon '23, Battle on the Bricks is a chance to return to his favorite stage. For second year Charleston softball head coach Maggie Mrowka, it's the opportunity to test herself in an entirely new arena. At this year's Battle on the Bricks, both former and current Cougars will step into the ring for a cause bigger than themselves.
Fresh off a historical season first season leading Cougar softball, head coach Mrowka is trading the dugout for the boxing ring.
"I wanted to challenge myself to learn a new skill for the first time in my life other than softball," said Mrowka.
After leading the Cougars to their first ever CAA title and second ever NCAA tournament appearance, Mrowka finds herself ready to represent Shaolin Boxing as she competes against Shannon Martinez. When the opportunity to compete in Battle on the Bricks arose, Mrowka was ready to test her training. Balancing the preparation during her first season as head coach was no easy task.
"Honestly, it was pretty humbling," Mrowka said. "Just the constant pressure that the season puts on you is a lot, but to also be going out and consistently sparring and working out was a lot."
Mrowka credited her team for keeping her motivated.
"Watching our girls bust their butts every day was a good reminder to not give up," she added.
Watching her team push through challenges helped Mrowka stay committed to her own goals in the ring. That same competitive drive is something she shares with fellow Battle on the Bricks participant Bolon, who will be making his second appearance at the event.
The former CofC men's basketball star says his mindset has only sharpened since his first Battle of the Bricks appearance in 2024.
"I know what to expect and I can train smarter. There's nothing like competing in TD Arena; it's still my favorite place to perform."
In Bolon's two seasons performing at TD Arena, he became one of the program's most decorated players earning All-CAA First Team honors, finishing as a finalist for the Lou Henson Award, and playing a key role in the Cougars journey to a 31-4 season, culminating in a CAA Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. His trademark toughness defined most of his Charleston career, something fans can expect to see on display when he represents Cool Hands Boxing on June 20.
That connection to the CofC community is one of the reasons returning to Battle on the Bricks means so much to Bolon. Nicknamed "Psycho D" during his playing days, he continues to feel the support of Cougar fans.
"I still feel the College of Charleston community's support daily, in life and business. Walking around Charleston, I still see familiar faces, and I'm forever grateful for their belief in me—even still calling me Psycho."
Dalton last competed in Battle on the Bricks in 2024 where he won his match against Logan Paulsen. The competitive challenge is what drew him back to the ring, but the event's charitable mission gives the experience even greater meaning.
"I decided to participate again because I love competing and wanted a goal to train for. Plus, I can give my time and energy to support incredible charities" Bolon said.
Battle on the Bricks is more than a night of boxing, but it's a night in which change is ignited across the Lowcountry through the support seven charities, including the Charleston Athletic Fund. The Charleston Athletic Fund supports the success of College of Charleston student-athletes through scholarships, facility improvements, sport-specific initiatives, and other resources that enhance the student-athlete experience. Serving 388 student-athletes across 19 varsity sports and helping fund 232 scholarships, the organization plays a vital role in the success of Cougar Athletics. The Charleston Athletic Fund helps Cougars succeed on the field, in the classroom, and throughout the community.
For Bolon and Mrowka, Battle on the Bricks is as much about community impact as it is competition.
"People should come because it's an absolute blast, but most importantly, it gives back." Bolon said, emphasizing the event's energy and charitable mission. Mrowka agreed, calling it a can't-miss night on June 20.
