Charleston, S.C. — The Pat Kelsey coaching era at the College of Charleston began with a resounding 106-74 win over South Carolina State on Thursday night at TD Arena. The Cougars erupted for their most points in a season opener since the 1972-73 campaign.
CofC improved to 9-2 in its last 11-season openers and have now won eight straight such games since the 2014-15 campaign. Kelsey got his first victory at the helm and is now just 13 wins shy of 200 in his career.
Senior John Meeks scored 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting to lead six Cougars in double figures. Eleven Cougars found the scoring column on an electric night at TD Arena that saw 4,448 fans in attendance.
CofC shot 48 percent and outrebounded South Carolina State 57-38. The Cougars outpaced the Bulldogs 54-34 in points in the paint. CofC forced 21 South Carolina State turnovers in a stingy defensive effort.
