KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Zach Reuland (Rock Hill, S.C.) was the top finisher for the College of Charleston men's golf team at the inaugural Kiawah Invitational held at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Oak Point course.
Against some of the nation's top college golfers from the Big Ten Conference, ACC and SEC, Reuland tied for 16th on the individual leaderboard with rounds of 68, 70 and 74 to finish at 4-under par for the tournament. Not a bad showing for his first career start for the Cougars.
"Zach had a tremendous first showing for CofC," Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "He has the tools to compete with the best regardless of course or conditions. This has given Zach a tremendous amount of confidence leading into the rest of the spring."
The Cougars turned in a collective three-round score of 862 (-2) and placed 10th ahead of Rutgers, Michigan State, Maryland and East Carolina.
The 14-team field included two Top 10-ranked teams in Wake Forest and Clemson, which both finished as tournament champion and tournament runner-up shooting 54-hole totals of 827 (-37) and 836 (-28) respectively.
Michael Brennan of Wake Forest was the individual medalist shooting 16-under par with rounds of 67, 68 and a tournament-low 65 on the final day.
"As a team, we just never got it going," Krywulycz said. "We expect more from ourselves, but the effort was definitely there. It's time for a few days off and then back to developing our games in time for the Palmetto (Intercollegiate)."
Charleston will compete next at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on March 8-9 in Aiken, S.C.
