GAME PREVIEW
After a team pause due to COVID-19 protocols, the College of Charleston men's basketball team (5-8, 3-3 CAA) gets back on the hardwood this weekend with Towson (3-10, 2-6 CAA) in town on Saturday, Feb. 6 and Sunday, Feb. 7 at TD Arena. Both are set for a 1:00 p.m. (ET) tipoff on FloSports. While on pause the last two weeks, the Cougars' conference games at William & Mary and James Madison were postponed. They were last in action against Northeastern with back-to-back home games that were decided in single digits to the Huskies on Jan. 16 (L, 67-62) and Jan. 17 (L, 68-66). Charleston will play five of its last eight games of the season on their home court, before the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championship that will now be held on March 6-9 in Harrisonburg, Va., instead of Washington, D.C. Always an annual battle with the Tigers, expect another physical matchup especially on the boards as Towson ranks No. 20 in offensive rebounds per game (13.15). The Cougars currently rank No. 19 in the nation in turnovers per game (10.6 avg.) and No. 60 in three-point field-goal percentage shooting a league-best 36.7 percent from beyond the arc this season.
SCOUTING TOWSON
Towson was picked to finish fourth in the league preseason poll and is looking to end a five-game slide in conference play. The Tigers dropped a pair of games against William & Mary last weekend including a 75-74 stunner on Jan. 31 at SECU Arena. They are led by preseason All-CAA First Team selection and senior guard Zane Martin, who is averaging a team-best 15.7 points per game.
SUITS AND SNEAKERS WEEK BENEFITING COACHES VS. CANCER
The College of Charleston men's basketball coaching staff will don Coaches vs. Cancer logo masks and sneakers this weekend as part of this year's Suits and Sneakers Week, a Coaches vs. Cancer initiative that took place on Jan. 25-31 to support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission. COUGAR SOUND BITES
"Everyone is doing fine. We were out for 10 days. We were excited to get back into the gym this week to prepare for our games this weekend. Hopefully, there were some things that helped our team develop (during the quarantine)." – CofC Head Coach Earl Grant on getting back into action after a team pause
"Certainly, Brenden has been playing well. Some of it was opportunity. Brevin Galloway went down due to injury, and last year, he played behind an NBA guy (in Grant Riller). This year, he was playing behind our leading scorer (Galloway). He didn't realize all last season – getting beat up in practice and dealing with really good players – it was preparing him for this moment. He was ready for the moment when it presented itself. We knew he was capable. The opportunity presented itself and that's the only difference. We always saw it in practice when he was on the second team. We could see it coming." – Coach Grant on sophomore Brenden Tucker emerging as one of the top young scorers in the CAA and what changed for him in January
"Feeling excited to get back on the court, knowing we have been out two weeks. Towson has been on the court and have not been in quarantine. They have a couple of new guys with most everyone back. They are a pretty tough team. They play physical. They always give us a fight. We will try to come out with high energy to get the juices flowing. It will be nice to be in front of the fans tomorrow. It always gives us energy with the home crowd behind us." – Junior Guard Zep Jasper on getting back into action and facing Towson this weekend
"The mindset of the team right now is to take it one game at a time. Basically, play hard every game. Get back into the flow of things. Missing two weeks was crucial. We want to be playing at our best to get a good seed for next month's (CAA) tournament." – Jasper on the team's mindset now with the season winding down
"Personally, I was working on staying in game shape, while the other guys were in quarantine. Working on my jump shot. Conditioning and making sure I was staying on track." – Jasper on what he worked on individually during the team pause
