CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's soccer squad opened the 2021-22 CofC athletics calendar year with a 1-1 draw vs. Georgia Southern on Thursday night at Ralph Lundy Field. The Cougars battled to earn the tie after scoring in the opening half and surrendering an early second half goal.

CofC opened the campaign with a win or draw for the first time since the 2018 season. It marked the first draw overall since the Cougars tied William & Mary, 0-0, on March 13, 2021.

CofC jumped in front in the 43^rd minute with a strike from junior midfielder Natalie Sgro. She shifted past the keeper and found the back of the net after an assist on a free kick from senior MK Waters. Georgia Southern countered with a header on a set piece following a CofC foul in the 63^rd minute.

Both teams would have chances down the stretch, including a rip from freshman Delaney Dawes from outside the box that hit the crossbar in the 88^th minute.

Key Cougars

Junior midfielder Natalie Sgro scored her first career goal, finding the back of the net in the first half.
Senior midfielder MK Waters tallied the assist on Sgro's score, nabbing her first career assist.
Junior Olivia Freitas ripped a team-high nine shots, including four on goal.

Game Notes

With three saves on Thursday, senior goalkeeper Meredith Holton moved into sole possession of 10^th all-time on CofC's career saves list. She finished the evening with three saves and has 107 in her career.
Three freshmen – Mary Alexander, Delaney Dawes and Shae Yocum – made their first career starts for The College on Thursday.
The Cougars outshot Georgia Southern, 26-7, and held a 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
CofC is now undefeated in the last eight meetings with Georgia Southern, going 6-0-2 in those matchups.
