Reigning CAA Champion CofC Men’s Golf Hosts Battle of Briar’s Creek to Open ’21-22 Season

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston men's golf team starts its 2021-22 campaign Monday, Sept. 20 with the Battle at Briar's Creek in Johns Island. The two-day, 54-hole event, which runs from Monday-Tuesday, marks the 10th annual tournament hosted by CofC at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek. Fourteen teams are participating including Campbell, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, ECU, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Jacksonville, James Madison, Maryland, Memphis, UNCW, Virginia Tech and Winthrop.
Head coach Mitch Krywulycz enters his fourth campaign at the helm after earning Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors last spring. In 2021, the Cougars captured the CAA Championship and earned an NCAA Regional berth. Sophomore Zach Reuland returns after winning the 2021 CAA individual title, highlighting a breakout freshman campaign.
Reuland is joined by a host of fresh faces as the Cougars boast five talented freshmen in Nevill Ruiter, Kieron van Wyk, Ty Sullivan, Cameron Johnstone and Tim Bertenbreiter, who are all making their collegiate debuts this week. Ruiter, van Wyk and Sullivan will launch their careers in the 1,2 and 4 spots in the CofC lineup, respectively. Johnstone and Bertenbreiter will compete as individuals.
The tournament at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek is open to the public and admission is free. Play begins Monday morning with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start as the participants will play 36 continuous holes on day one before wrapping up with 18 holes on Tuesday. Face masks are required inside the clubhouse.
