
Cougars Win North Points #3, Place Second at SAISA Women's Open

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team cruised to a 1-2 finish at North Points #3 on Saturday and closed out the weekend placing second and sixth at the SAISA Women's Open on Sunday to mark a strong return to form.
Freshman Charlie McKenzie skippered Cougar 1 to a four-point win in A-Division at North Points #3 with five points from three races alongside fellow freshman crew Leah Cody. The duo won race one and placed second in each of the next two rotations. Skipper Ethan Homberger and crew Nina Lubchenco won B-Division with four points to help Cougar 1 post a nine-point victory in the regatta.
Cougar 2 placed second in the regatta with 18 points paced by a second-place performance from freshmen Grace Beard and Sophia Browne in B-Division. The duo recorded six points from three races including a win in the third rotation. Freshman skipper Fredrikke Foss and sophomore crew Chloe Hudgins finished third in A-Division with 12 points.
The Cougars capped the weekend finishing second and sixth at the SAISA Women's Open on Sunday. Cougar 2, led by Lubcheno and Julia Jeffries with 10 points in B-Division, placed second in the regatta with 24 points. Beard and Browne accumulated 14 points in A-Division with a trio of top-five finishes. Cougar 1 placed sixth with 35 points. Foss and Hudgins finished fourth in A-Division with 11 points from three races while Cody and Rowan Schanley sailed to 24 points in B-Division.
Charleston returns to the water next weekend with two regattas on the schedule. The Cougars will race for the Danmark Trophy on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3 in New London, Conn. and compete at the Women's ACC Semifinals on Saturday and Sunday in Norfolk, Va.
