
Lieger, Gray Star in Field Events at USC Open

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Luzy Lieger broke her own school record in the indoor pole vault, and Logan Gray made a dramatic leap up the leaders in the shot put at the USC Open on Friday at the Carolina Indoor Track and Field Complex.
Lieger cleared the bar at 3.83m (12 feet, 6 ¾ inches) to eclipse her previous best indoor mark by .03m and finish second in the meet. Gray threw the shot put 13.11m (43 feet, ¼ inch) to move up from sixth to third in the indoor record book.
Gray's throw was more than a meter better than her previous PR and enabled her to finish seven on Friday.
The mile record book was also rewritten, with Cate Ambrose moving from fifth to fourth with her time of 5:04.16, good for a second-place finish. Kristen Cherry (5:08.89) and Emily Dorony (5:09.26) moved into ninth and 10th place, respectively, in school history.
Kacey Smekrud inched up from eighth to sixth among the 800 leaders in Cougar history with a time of 2:20.13. Kaitlynn Bailey lowered her PR in the 200 to 26.30, a mark which places her sixth in the record book. She also had a mark of 1:00.93 in the 400, just .11 shy of cracking the Top 10.
The meet concluded the indoor season for the Cougars. Their first outdoor meet takes place on March 11-12 at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge.
