
Ambrose Sets School Mark as Part of Rewritten Mile Record Book

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The College of Charleston competed in only three events at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on Friday but still had several record book altering performances.
Cate Ambrose led a group of five Cougars who made a significant change in the outdoor mile, setting a school record with a time of 5:00.54 to break the mark of 5:00.99 set by Hayley McMahon in 2015. Ambrose entered the meet in fourth place in the event.
Four runners cracked the Top 10 in the mile on Friday, including Kristen Cherry (fifth, 5:08.50), Emily Dorony (sixth, 5:10.44), Sophia Brown (eighth, 5:16.06) and Shannon Smith (ninth, 5:17.13).
Kacey Smekrud and Rhian Purves are new members of the record book in the 800. Smekrud moved into sixth place by crossing the finish line in 2:18.19 and is one spot ahead of Purves (2:18.75). Meike Kalus (2:25.06) and Grace McGrew (2:25.54) had PRs in the 800.
Dorony, Ambrose, Cherry and Brown teamed up for a time of 9:39.39 in the 4x800 relay, the second-fastest in school history.
The Cougars are back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Montreat (N.C.) College Invitational.
