
Kieron Van Wyk Wins Schenkel, Cougs Take Third as a Team

It marks van Wyk's first career tournament win
STATESBORO, GEORGIA – Charleston Men's Golf freshman Kieron van Wyk won his first career tournament, capturing medalist honors at the 42nd annual Schenkel Invitational. Van Wyk fired a 12-under par 204 to beat a field of 87 competitors by two strokes.
CofC took third overall as a team propelled by van Wyk's medalist performance. The Cougars shot a 14-under 850, punctuated with a 281 on Sunday. Head coach Mitch Krywulycz' squad beat three Top-50 teams and six power conference programs including Kentucky, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Iowa on their path to a third-place finish.
Following closely behind van Wyk for CofC was another stellar freshman in Nevill Ruiter, who placed T-7 at 5-under. Ruiter shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday with two birdies, an eagle and 14 pars. Ruiter now has three Top-10 finishes during his freshman campaign and four consecutive Top-25 performances.
Sophomore Zach Reuland gave CofC three Top-25 individual finishers, catapulting 24 spots up the leaderboard with a 2-under 70 on Sunday. He finished 1-over for the tournament.
Senior Jack Parrott carded a tournament-best even-par 72 on Sunday to move up 14 positions on the leaderboard. He finished 7-over par for the week and T-55 overall after a 75 in Round 1 and 76 in Round 2. Charleston's Ty Sullivan rounded out the Cougars' scoring placing T-63. He fired back-to-back 73s in Rounds 1 and 2 to highlight his week.
CofC returns home to co-host the famed Hootie Intercollegiate at Bulls Bay with South Carolina. The tournament takes place March 27-28 in Awendaw, S.C.
