COLUMBIA, S.C. – Rhian Purves, Logan Gray and Tonet Tallie each moved into third place in school history in their respective events to lead the College of Charleston track and field team at the UofSC Open on Saturday.
Purves moved up six spots in the Cougar record book in the 800 with a time of 2:14.13. Her time was the fastest by a Charleston athlete in seven years and placed her seventh in a strong 46-runner field.
Three other Cougars finished in the upper half of the standings. Cate Ambrose was 14th (2:16.97), Kacey Smekrud was 16th (2:17.16) and Emily Dorony placed 18th (2:17.86).
Gray continued her outstanding freshman season with a discus throw of 41.95m (137 feet, 7 inches) and rose from eighth place. Tallie cleared 3.65m (11 feet, 11 ¾ inches) in the pole vault to climb three spots.
Luzy Lieger won her bracket of the pole vault by going 3.85m (12 feet, 7 ½ inches) and not missing any of her five attempts between 3.40 and 3.85. Chloe Christian matched Tallie at 3.65m.
Alicia Wilson established PRs in both the 100 (12.76) and 200 (26.18) and came within .09 seconds of cracking the Top 10 in school history in the 100. Kaitlynn Bailey turned in a 25.43 in the 200, just .03 shy of her PR.
Tallie, Wilson, Bailey and Asiah Gadson teamed up to post a season-best time of 49.57 in the 4x100 relay.
The Cougars are back in action May 6-7 when they compete in the CAA Championships in Boston.
