CofC Swells Lead to Nine Strokes with 18 Holes Left at CAA Championship

Nevill Ruiter and Kieron van Wyk are in first and second individually
DATAW ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Charleston Men's Golf squad extended its lead on the field with an electric Round 2 at the CAA Championship on Monday. CofC now leads second-place UNCW by nine strokes heading into the final round, sitting at 21-under par through 36 holes of golf.
CofC shot a blistering 14-under par 274 as a team on Monday at the Dataw Island Cotton Dike Course, one stroke shy of matching the all-time CAA Tournament single-round team record. The five Cougars competing racked up 25 combined birdies in Round 2 to swell the lead to nine strokes.
Freshmen Nevill Ruiter and Kieron van Wyk are leading CofC and sit in first and second place, respectively entering Tuesday's final round. Ruiter shot a tournament-best 7-under 65 in Round 2 and is 11-under for the tournament, three strokes ahead of van Wyk. Ruiter's 65 was one stroke short of tying the all-time CAA Tournament single-round mark. He finished with eight birdies and just one bogey, firing a second-nine 32.
Van Wyk shot a 32 on the front nine with four birdies and finished with a strong 5-under 67 in Round 2. He is 8-under overall after a 69 on Sunday and is second overall, two strokes ahead of third place.
Sophomore Zach Reuland shot up six spots on the leaderboard with a 3-under 69 on Monday. Over his final 11 holes, Reuland was 3-under with three birdies and 11 pars. The defending CAA champion shot a 71 in Round 1 and is 4-under and T-4 overall, giving CofC three Cougars in the Top 5 entering the final 18 holes of action.
Senior Jack Parrott carded a second consecutive 73 and is T-20 overall individually. He sunk three birdies in Round 2. Freshman Tim Bertenbreiter subbed in for Round 2 and put together a strong performance, collecting four birdies on his way to posting a 1-over 73.
