RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 56 Charleston Men's Golf finished the regular season in style on Saturday, placing fifth of 13 at N.C. State's Stitch Intercollegiate behind four ranked teams. The Cougars beat No. 30 ETSU, Nebraska and UNCG, among others, on the way to claiming their fourth Top-5 finish of the 2021-22 campaign.
CofC fired a 17-over par 881 for the tournament, sandwiching a 299 in the second round with a -1 under 287 in the opening round and a 7-over par 295 in Tuesday's final round. The Cougars were one of five teams on the course to shoot a 7-over par or better over the last 18 holes at the 7,287-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Three Cougars finished in the Top 20 individually, led by sophomore Zach Reuland who placed T-14 overall at 3-over. Reuland fired an even-par 72 in Round 1 and capped his week with a tournament-best 1-under 71 in Round 3. He made his mark on Par 5s yet again, finishing with the second-best scoring average on Par 5s by any individual in the field (4.53). His T-14 performance was his best since a T-9 finish at the OTC Collegiate Invitational in late September.
Freshmen Kieron van Wyk and Nevill Ruiter were just behind Reuland, finishing T-17 and T-19 respectively. Van Wyk snagged his fifth Top-20 individual finish to cap a sensation rookie regular season. His consistent week was anchored by a 1-under 71 in Round 2 and he led the entire tournament in total pars with 42. Ruiter continued his impressive hot streak of Top-25 finishes with his sixth in a row.
Senior Jack Parrott launched his week with a solid 1-over 73 in Round 1. He wound up T-40 overall at 10-over par. Ty Sullivan also got off to a strong start with a 1-under 71 in the opening round and finished T-47 for the tournament, ensuring all five Cougars placed in the Top 50 in a field of 83 competitors.
CofC now turns to the CAA Championship where the Cougars seek a second consecutive league title under head coach Mitch Krywulycz. Sophomore Zach Reuland also looks for another CAA individual crown after winning medalist honors at the CAA Championships last spring as a freshman. The 2022 CAA Tournament runs April 24-26 in Dataw Island, S.C.
