The Cougars are seeking a sixth CAA title in nine years
DATAW ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Charleston Men's Golf program seeks to defend its 2021 CAA title when the Cougars head to the 2022 CAA Championship from Sunday-Tuesday in Dataw Island, S.C. CofC has won five conference championships since joining the CAA in 2013 and looks to secure a sixth title in the last nine years this week. Play tees off Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
CofC captured the team trophy in style last spring with a 30-under par 834 – the lowest 54-hole team total in CAA history, beating the field by 23 strokes. Current sophomore Zach Reuland won the individual championship as a freshman with a 13-under and enters this year's event as the only returning Cougar from the title-winning squad last year.
A win at this week's CAA Championship would earn the Cougars their ninth NCAA Regional appearance in program history and the sixth since 2014. Head coach Mitch Krywulycz' squad enters the tournament ranked No. 52 nationally, 49 spots higher than any team in the CAA.
CofC takes on a field of eight teams including Delaware, Drexel, Elon, Hofstra, Towson, UNCW and William & Mary. James Madison's five individual entrants will be eligible for the individual medalist honors, but not the team competition.
CofC enters the CAA Championship coming off a fifth-place finish at The Stitch Intercollegiate, the Cougars' fourth Top-5 performance of the 2021-22 campaign despite a grueling slate. Charleston's lineup will be spearheaded by the talented freshman duo of Nevill Ruiter and Kieron van Wyk. Ruiter is ranked 80th nationally indivudally with an adjusted scoring average of 71.20 and has secured six Top-25 finishes in a row including a win at the Daniel Island Intercollegiate in November. Van Wyk's sensational rookie campaign has been highlighted by medalist honors at the famed Schenkel Invitational in March. He enters his first CAA Championship ranked No. 152 nationally.
Reuland looks for back-to-back CAA individual titles riding a wave of momentum. He finished T-14 to lead the Cougars at The Stitch two weeks ago – his best finish of the spring season. At No. 225, Reuland gives Charleston three Cougars ranked in the Top 250 nationally heading into postseason. CofC's lineup is rounded out by veteran senior Jack Parrott in the fourth spot and Ty Sullivan in the fifth slot.
