NEW ORLEANS --- The College of Charleston sailing team made a strong push late on day one and carried the momentum into Friday's day two but the Cougars were unable to overcome a sluggish start en route to a 12th-place finish in the College Sailing Open Western Semifinal on Thursday and Friday.
The Cougars accumulated 228 points through 11 rotations finishing 39 points shy of a tie for ninth and a berth in Saturday and Sunday's finals. Brandon Geller skippered Charleston to 95 points and a ninth-place finish in A-Division alongside a crew rotation of Lucy Klempen, Jack Sutton and Anna Sherry. The quartet collected four top-three finishes including back-to-back seconds in races five and six.
Charleston finished the regatta with 133 points in B-Division with Max Anker skippering five races and Pierce Ornstein taking the tiller for six. Noelle Owen crewed the first eight rotations with Sutton on the gunwale for the remaining three. The quartet turned in a trio of top-10 finishes including a fourth-place performance in race six.
Charleston will next compete in the ICSA College Sailing Women's Western Semifinal on Monday and Tuesday with a berth in Wednesday and Thursday's finals on the line.
