MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Delaney Dawes scored just 17 seconds into the game for the only goal College of Charleston would need in a 3-0 victory over Coastal Carolina on Sunday night at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
The Cougars improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2014 and have recorded back-to-back shutouts to open the season for the first time since 2008. Charleston outshot the Chanticleers by a lopsided 28-6 margin with the combination of keepers
Katie Carrino and
Savannah Barron forced to make just one save.
Olivia Freitas made a run off the opening kickoff and fed to Dawes who beat Coastal netminder Katelyn Kellogg to quickly put the Cougars in front. Dawes scored for the sixth time in her career after leading the team with five goals as a freshman a year ago.
The Cougars kept the pressure on and were rewarded in the 16th minute when Freitas added to her earlier assist with a goal.
Faith Slimmer assisted on the tally and already has three helpers and a goal in two games.
Grace Powell rounded out the scoring in the 59th minute when she secured a rebound off a shot by
Bubbles Dever and found the back of the net.
"This was an incredible performance tonight from the group. Honestly, we were just so good on both sides of the ball all night," said head coach
Christian Michner. "I'm proud that we finished some chances and kept another clean sheet.Â
"This team is hungry and will continue to get better. The mentality of the group is something special, and I'm excited to see us play on the road now for a few."
That road trip begins on Friday in Macon, Ga., against Mercer followed by a Sunday contest at Georgia. The Bears are 1-0-1 while the Bulldogs are 1-1 following Sunday's loss to No. 1 Florida State.
