CHARLESTON, S.C. - On almost every beautiful Charleston day or night, the streets are filled with bike taxis taking their passengers to one of the many delicious restaurants in town or for a relaxing trip down King Street.
Some tourists are lucky enough to have their ride downtown guided by a College of Charleston student-athlete. Men's soccer senior James Cox and equestrian junior Abby Barnes are two Cougars seen biking the streets of Charleston.
"It's a great way to keep in shape," says Barnes, who has been working with Charleston Pedicab for a year. "I get paid to work out, I'm talking to people and I'm outside."
Both athletes enjoy the opportunity to share the experience of Charleston with locals and tourists alike.
"I enjoy the beautiful weather while people-watching and admiring the beauty this city has to offer," says Cox, a Charleston Bike Taxi driver since his first year at The College.
In his time off the pitch, Cox is able to stay active while meeting new people on every ride.
"I love the exercise that I get," says Cox. "It is not too physically demanding but allows me to release any built-up soreness I get from playing soccer."
His attitude on the soccer field translates to working on the bike for the midfielder.
"I enjoy the competitive nature of working and since it is based on commission and tips, you are pushed to work harder," says Cox.
As CofC students, both are always asked for recommendations of the best spots to visit in the Holy City.
"I tell people to go for walks, check out rooftops, go to the beaches," says Barnes. "And to look into the history because it is fascinating."
Charleston has a lot to offer between its food, history and sightseeing, and these Cougar athletes have the unique opportunity to share it with visitors.
