CHARLESTON, S.C. - In collaboration with Trident United Way, the College of Charleston's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Charleston athletic department participated in the Cougars annual Day of Service on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
"Our student-athletes and coaches do a great job of giving back to the community through their own team efforts. Yesterday we were able to come together as a department and engage with the community of Charleston for our Day of Service ," College of Charleston Athletics Director Matt Roberts said. "Service is one of our core values and there's nothing more important than for us to be able to demonstrate and act upon that core value when we engage with the community and give back to the same people that give so much to us."
The Cougars visited 21 locations around the Charleston area to take part in a variety of service projects. Organizations visited include Lowcountry Orphan Relief, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, CATR, Keep North Charleston Beautiful, Palmetto Goodwill – Ben Sawyer, Palmetto Goodwill - Rivers Ave, Palmetto Goodwill- Ashley Phosphate, Palmetto Goodwill – James Island, Palmetto Goodwill – Six Mile, Children's Museum of the Lowcountry, Charleston Area Senior Citizens, CYDC, James B. Edwards Elementary, Read Across America, Southern Tails, DNR Score, Mitchell Elementary, Memminger Elementary, Jennie Moore Elementary, Christ Our King and College of Charleston Sustainability.
"I worked with the Low Country Orphan Relief in North Charleston to sort items for children in need and create Care Packages," said volleyball student-athlete Emma Appleman. "It was super fun to work with other athletes and give back to our community. I feel incredibly thankful to be a part of a department that wants to be involved with service and work within our community."
Director of Student-Athlete Development Clarke Allen was instrumental in organizing the Day of Service.
"Being able to give back to the greater Charleston Community was a fantastic opportunity. Seeing staff, coaches, and student-athletes across all sports come together to give back to the community that gives so much to us was very rewarding," said Allen. "Having our 18 programs come together as one to serve a bigger purpose outside of athletics was the real win."
